What is the semantic use of structured data?
Making the content of a page explicit as types and relations rather than leaving the engine to infer them from strings.
What does Google document?
Explicit clues about meaning, classification of content, information about objects in the world. Understanding is the documented effect. A ranking improvement from “doing semantic search with schema” is not.
What is this based on?
Because Google states that it uses markup to understand page content. That is a semantic-search sentence.
What do result pages leave out?
Understanding a query is not the same job as having written the answer. Markup helps with the first. It does not write the missing document. The field page on this site already draws that line.
