What is the Knowledge Graph in this distinction?
Google’s store of entities. Your markup is a labelled claim about which entity this page is talking about. The two meet only if Google already has, or later builds, a node that can accept the match.
What can structured data do?
A stable @id, a type, a name and sameAs links to Wikidata, Wikipedia, official profiles or company registries reduce ambiguity. Help is not insertion.
