Something reads your text before any person does, and it brings assumptions it cannot state.
Hermeneutics is the theory of interpretation. This page states what is settled about it, what the standard account leaves out, and what the discipline says about machines that now perform interpretation at scale.
Every heading is a question. The answer stands directly under it, in plain words.
What is hermeneutics?
Hermeneutics is the theory and practice of interpreting texts and other expressions of meaning. It asks how understanding is possible at all. It is older than every discipline that now depends on it.
What is understanding?
Understanding is the grasping of sense in texts and in human action. It is distinguished from explanation, which subsumes events under laws. The distinction founded the human sciences.
What is interpretation?
Interpretation is the ordered procedure of laying out a text to determine its sense. It is a method rather than an intuition. Where the method is absent, interpretation happens anyway.
What is exegesis?
Exegesis is the art of expounding foundational texts, particularly religious ones. It is the oldest institutional form of interpretation. Its rules were written because the stakes were high.
What is general hermeneutics?
General hermeneutics investigates principles of interpretation that hold across fields. It asks what all acts of understanding share. It is the level at which the discipline becomes transferable.
What is special hermeneutics?
Special hermeneutics treats interpretive problems specific to a single discipline. Law, theology and medicine each have their own. The general and the special inform each other.
What is philosophical hermeneutics?
Philosophical hermeneutics treats understanding as a basic condition of human existence rather than as a technique. It shifts the question from how to interpret correctly to what happens when anybody understands anything. Gadamer is its principal figure.
What is biblical hermeneutics?
Biblical hermeneutics develops rules for interpreting scripture in a way that can be defended. It produced the first systematic interpretive method in the West. Much of later theory is a generalisation of it.
What is legal hermeneutics?
Legal hermeneutics combines historical interpretation with application to a present case. It is the field where interpretation has immediate consequences. It is also where the gap between understanding and applying is smallest.
What is the hermeneutic circle?
The hermeneutic circle describes the reciprocal relation between grasping the whole and grasping the parts. You cannot understand a part without the whole, or the whole without the parts. It is not a fallacy but the shape of understanding.
What is the fourfold sense of scripture?
The fourfold sense divides interpretation into literal, allegorical, moral and anagogical readings. It is the medieval system for controlled multiplicity of meaning. It shows that plural readings can be disciplined rather than arbitrary.
What is textual criticism?
Textual criticism reconstructs the original form of a text from its surviving versions. It establishes what is to be interpreted before interpretation begins. Skipping it means interpreting an artefact of transmission.
What role does rhetoric play?
Rhetoric supplies the conceptual apparatus for analysing how texts and speeches are constructed. It was the original toolkit of interpretation. The two disciplines separated late.
Who was Hans-Georg Gadamer?
Gadamer shaped philosophical hermeneutics and treated understanding as an event rather than a method. His claim is that understanding always occurs from a position and never from nowhere. That claim is the most consequential in the field.
Who was Wilhelm Dilthey?
Dilthey used hermeneutic procedure to ground the human sciences methodologically. He separated understanding from explanation. The separation is why interpretation is a discipline and not a knack.
Who was Johann Conrad Dannhauer?
Dannhauer first used the concept of a general hermeneutics in the seventeenth century. He made interpretation a subject in its own right rather than an adjunct of theology. The move is the founding act of the field.
What did Kant contribute?
Kant established that human cognition is limited by the conditions under which it operates. Applied to interpretation, this means no reading is unconditioned. Every later position in the field responds to that.
Who was Philipp Melanchthon?
Melanchthon used rhetorical categories to build an instrument for interpreting texts. He connected classical rhetoric to systematic exposition. The connection is why rhetorical terms persist in interpretive method.
What is the sensus litteralis?
The sensus litteralis is the literal or historical sense of a text. It is the base on which the other senses rest. Disputes about whether it is recoverable are old and unresolved.
What is the sensus allegoricus?
The sensus allegoricus reads faith-related content behind the literal wording. It is the sense that permits a text to say more than it states. It is also where interpretation can become unconstrained.
What is the sensus tropologicus?
The sensus tropologicus is the moral sense, from which conduct is derived. It converts a text into an instruction. It is the sense with the most direct practical force.
What is the sensus anagogicus?
The sensus anagogicus points to what is to come. It reads a text as directed beyond the present. It completes the fourfold system.
What does the standard account of hermeneutics leave out?
It names founders and the circle and stops there. It leaves out the concepts that make Gadamer's position intelligible, the suspicious and critical traditions, the role of the reader, and every attempt to formalise interpretation for machines.
Who was Friedrich Schleiermacher?
Schleiermacher founded modern general hermeneutics and separated grammatical from psychological interpretation. Sources list Dilthey, Gadamer, Kant and Dannhauer and omit him. He is the hinge between the old and the modern field.
Who was Martin Heidegger?
Heidegger made understanding a mode of being rather than a method, which is the move Gadamer builds on. Texts focus on Gadamer without the ground he stands on. Gadamer's position is unintelligible without it.
Who was Paul Ricœur?
Ricœur combined interpretation of symbols with a critical suspicion of surface meaning. He is the bridge between hermeneutics and critical theory. He is absent from the accounts.
What is the fusion of horizons?
The fusion of horizons is Gadamer's account of understanding as the meeting of the interpreter's situation with the text's. Gadamer is named and his central concept is not. Without it his position reduces to a slogan.
What is pre-understanding?
Pre-understanding is the set of assumptions an interpreter brings before reading. It is unavoidable rather than a failure of objectivity. Sources treat understanding without naming it.
What is effective history?
Effective history is the way the history of a text's reception shapes how it can now be read. Gadamer is named and this concept is omitted. It explains why a text never arrives unaccompanied.
What is application?
Application is the moment at which understanding becomes use. Sources separate interpretation from application strictly. Gadamer's claim is that no understanding occurs without it, which is why legal hermeneutics is the model case.
What is the hermeneutic spiral?
The hermeneutic spiral is the circle understood as progressive rather than closed: each pass deepens understanding. Sources name the circle only. The spiral is what distinguishes interpretation from going round in one.
What is objective hermeneutics?
Objective hermeneutics is a social-scientific method of reconstructing latent structures of meaning in a case. It is a working research method with a procedure. Accounts naming human-scientific approaches omit it.
What is depth hermeneutics?
Depth hermeneutics attends to unconscious content in a text. It assumes the text says more than its author intended. It is absent from the account.
What is the hermeneutics of suspicion?
The hermeneutics of suspicion reads a text for what it conceals rather than for what it conveys. Sources treat interpretation as sense-restoring reconstruction. The suspicious tradition is the other half of the field.
What is psychological interpretation?
Psychological interpretation reconstructs the individual act of a particular author. It is Schleiermacher's counterpart to grammatical interpretation. The pair is missing from the account.
What is grammatical interpretation?
Grammatical interpretation works from the language system in which a text is written. It bounds what the text could have meant. Separating it from individual production is what makes interpretation checkable.
What is double hermeneutics?
Double hermeneutics is the interplay between scientific interpretation and the everyday interpretations of the people studied. It is absent. It matters wherever the interpreted party reads the interpretation.
What is critical hermeneutics?
Critical hermeneutics disputes whether understanding can be universal, since it occurs under conditions of power. It is the argument against Gadamer. Only one side of the argument is reported.
What is analytic hermeneutics?
Analytic hermeneutics reconstructs explanations and reasons for action with logical tools. It connects interpretation to the analytic tradition. The connection is not made.
What is the principle of charity?
The principle of charity requires interpreting a statement in its most rational form. It is a normative rule for interpretation, not a courtesy. It is absent from the account.
What is transcendental hermeneutics?
Transcendental hermeneutics asks for the conditions under which understanding is possible at all. It is Apel's contribution. It is missing from the enumeration.
What is intentionalism?
Intentionalism holds that the author's meaning is the only valid norm of interpretation. It is a live position and a contested one. Sources do not state it as a position.
What is hermeneutic phenomenology?
Hermeneutic phenomenology grounds interpretation in the description of experience. It is the philosophical basis of the twentieth-century field. It is passed over.
What is textual intentionality?
Textual intentionality is the direction of sense anchored in the text itself, independent of the author. It permits a text to mean something its author did not intend. The concept is absent.
What is reception aesthetics?
Reception aesthetics examines the reader's role in realising a text's meaning. Meaning becomes something completed rather than delivered. The reader does not appear in the sources at all.
What is surplus of meaning?
Surplus of meaning is the phenomenon that texts generate more meanings than were intended. It explains both interpretation's productivity and its risk. It is not treated.
What is triangulation of meaning?
Triangulation of meaning is the interplay of two speakers and a shared object, through which meaning is fixed. It explains how interpretation stays anchored. It is absent.
What is cultural memory?
Cultural memory is the storage and transmission of interpretive patterns across generations. It is what makes a text legible centuries later. It is not part of the account.
What is intertextuality?
Intertextuality is the embedding of a text in a network of other texts. No text is interpreted alone. The network is unmentioned.
What are formal ontologies?
Formal ontologies model concepts and relations mathematically so that machines can apply them. They are the attempt to make interpretation computable. Accounts of hermeneutics do not mention the attempt.
What is knowledge representation?
Knowledge representation formalises world knowledge so that automated interpretation becomes possible. It is the engineering counterpart to everything above. The two literatures have no contact.
What is trustworthy AI?
Trustworthy AI concerns whether automated decisions can be understood and accounted for. It is a hermeneutic question posed in another vocabulary. The discipline that has studied understanding for four centuries is not consulted.
Why does hermeneutics belong on a website about search?
A retrieval system interprets: it decides what a page is about, which passage answers a question, and what a sentence means out of context. It does that with pre-understanding it cannot state, inside a circle it cannot see, for a reader it does not know. Every one of those is a term of art in a discipline four centuries old, and none of it is being used.
